Legends

A Hindu festival, Holi has several associated legends. The most important is the legend of the demon king Hiranyakashyap, who demanded that everyone in his kingdom worship him, except his pious son, Prahlad became a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap wanted their son killed. He asked his sister Holika to enter a scorching fire with Prahlad in his lap since Holika had a blessing that made him immune to the fire. History says that Prahlad was saved by the Lord himself for his extreme devotion and his evil mind Holika was burned to ashes because his blessing worked only when he entered the fire alone.

From that moment, people light a bonfire, called Holika on the eve of the Holi festival and celebrate the victory of good over evil and also the triumph of devotion to God. Children especially delight in tradition and this has another legend attached. He says there was once an ogre Dhundhi who used to bother children in the kingdom of Prithu. It was chased away by the children on Holi's day. Therefore, children can play jokes at the time of 'Holika Dahan'.

Some also celebrate Pootana's death with an evil mind. The oration tried to Lord Krishna when he was a baby feeding him with poisonous milk while executing the plan of Kansa, the uncle of Krishna's devil. However, Krishna sucked his blood and brought his end. Some who see the origin of the festivals from seasonal cycles believe that Pootana represents winter and his death ceases and the end of winter.
